Featured Post: Adam's Rib

Thanks for the thought provoking question you posed from Genesis 2:21-25! This is one of my favorite passages of scripture as it pertains to the marriage relationship, as God uniquely created woman for man, after deeming that it was not good for man to be alone. The question you pose is a significant one: What significance does the creation of woman from the rib of man have for women today? I think to answer this question, we have to really take a look at the majesty of what God did in this creation. In order to get an answer, you have to ask a question, and most of the time, that question is “WHY”? Why did God specifically create woman from the rib of man? He could have chosen any place on Adam’s body, or better yet, he could have created her from the dust of the ground just as he did for Adam, but He didn’t. He, instead, caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep and then used one of Adam’s ribs to create Eve.
I am of the belief that EVERYTHING God does is both ON and IN purpose, for both current and future revelation that will be forever lasting. I believe that God is always teaching and giving instruction for us to live by. In this passage, I believe God was giving direction on why woman was created: to be a “suitable helper” to her husband. Adam was working in peace, naming all the animals as God had commanded him to do, and had no idea that he was “lacking” anything. Yet, God looked at him and stated: “For Adam no suitable helper was found” (Genesis 2:18). So God created Eve.
I believe God used the rib of man to create woman because the designed purpose and function of the rib cage is what He intended to be the designed purpose and function of the wife. The rib cage has three distinct functions: for protection, support, and respiration. It protects the vital organs that sustain life, most importantly the heart. It acts as support to the bodily framework, and it can expand and contract to assist in a person's ability to breath regularly. If the rib cage is damaged, a man’s very life is at risk because what is used to sustain life…a heart beat and breath…are exposed to the elements.
I believe that what God expects from woman/wives of today is exactly what he expected when He created Eve: that she would serve as a suitable helper to Adam, specifically to protect his heart, support his work and calling, and to help him to breath easily! NOBODY else gets such an amazing job in the man’s life as the wife who was created specifically FROM and FOR him, not even the mother who birthed him. Woman has access to the very breath and heartbeat of a man, and that role should be valued daily and NEVER be taken lightly or for granted. God made woman with purpose and service in mind!
